Default 4wd

I dont know if this is where I should post it or not but I had someone ask me the other day how fast I was able to safely go with my 4WD on. He went on to say his truck says he can use it up to 55 MPH. I never thought about using it at those speeds because if I could go that fast safely it wasnt adverse enough conditions and I didnt need it. However with that being said it made me curious what was the limit of safely traveling in 4WD. I could not find any place in my manual saying to use up to any speeds etc. Any ideas?

I have no issue going 55 in 4wd. I am not worried about the transfer case at speed I am concerned about the front axle and its propensity to bind in turns while in 4wd. However you are not going to have turns that are going to be an issue going 55. While in general I dont go that fast I have found that there are times where I am traveling across the state with snow covered roads or especially partially snow covered roads that I use it at speed for long periods of time. I have driven hundreds of miles at a stretch in 4wd whether it be slower or at speed. Depends on the conditions. If you are going 55 you aren't doing hard turns etc you would generally be on a good road with sweeping turns and long stretches of straight like a highway where bind wont be an issue. If I do come upon a stretch with turns that are tighter than I prefer and dryer conditions through that stretch I will kick it out of 4wd for that stretch then once through put it back in.

I have traveled in 4wd from my driveway to my parents house in Montana several times....that is 635 miles one way. Now you may have to re-read your 4wd section again, but engaugement over 55 mph is not recommended. All of our Toyotas have clearly stated that, not sure about the Dodge.

I slip in and out 4wd quite often in my '03 when i'm traveling at highway speeds50-60 mph) in the winter time. It's just nice to use when going past people on snow covered roads and and ramps,i'm quite often towing the quad on the trailer as well going to plow jobs. I have the manual shifter on the floor so i just reach down and slide it in and out of 4hi.

I agree with the rest. I have done speeds of 65 and higher on the turnpike before they plow it. Kinda fun, feels like runnin a dirt truck at speed in mud and silt.

Guess this winter just got more fun, always worried about blowing the transfer case or front end up. Glad I asked! Thanks!

Just checked the manual for my 06 and it says 2h-4h max speed to change is 55. And ofcourse 4l best to roll 2-3mph and max speed 25 mph. (pg 268)also note says do not attempt to shift to or from 4l while tran is in gear or clutch is engaged. Hope this helps!

I drove an '08 once that had been in 4x4 while delivering a building and the front end didn't unlock when I shifted out. About 30 minutes down the road running about 65 or so, it looked like the engine blew and smelled AWFUL as boiling hot gear oil blew out the front axle vent tube.
AS best I remember these were mild weather conditions, maybe 60 deg.
I know it was early spring in Ms.
