You've got a 4 speed transmission. What you're feeling/seeing that makes you think there are more gears is the torque convertor locking. 4th gear is an overdrive.

you can do whatever you want, if i owned the truck i would be dropping the pan and changing all 4 solenoids and the fluid/filter.

i use Valvoline ATF+4 full synthetic

deej, glad it's working for ya.

Could be the realy wasn't making a good connection, doesn't seem likely,
but just pulling and replacing it would get it a cleaner spot on the blade.

I would say you're well overdue for a fluid and filter change.
It's not hard to do, but the trick is in trying to catch all the fluid that runs out when you pull the pan.
Course, if it IS a bad solenoid you get to pull the pan again to change those.

I guess if it were mine I would drive it a bit and if the problem doesn't return change the fluid and filter,
if it DOES return, change the solenoids too.

It would be wise to check for codes first though.

Check Codes:
Without actually starting the truck, cycle key on-off-on-off-on to read codes in odometer display.

99 dont work that way. i have a hypertec programmer to read codes on my 99

i just recently bought a $40 reader at Sears, i needed to read codes for my 03, all it does is reads and clears codes. i have used it 3 times, kinda handy to have around. used it on my 03 Dodge (no start), my 98 Jeep (lean), and my old to and from work truck 01 Toyota Taco (emissions air/fuel Ratio)

Funny,..... I just recently purchased a code reader from sears myself.
The local store was closing so it was 70% off, regular about $180.
This one lets you view all sensor readings in real time while the vehicle is running and works for anything with OBD2.
I've lost count of how many times I've used it already

My superchip also reads and clears codes.
