Default vonTrapp's Open Letter to Dieselram Members

Hello Folks

Contrary to popular belief, I am in fact, not deceased. I am not yet an Ex-Parrot My absence has entirely been due to changing circumstances up here with our business. Last November was the beginning of some challenging times for us; it was around then that I realized I needed to focus a lot more on the homefront.

After the upgrade to Dieselram was completed earlier this year, I just had to step back and take a break. Hopefully, you all like the new look and features that were put into the site. The community at Dieselram helped me out a lot over the years, so the work was in part a “thank you” of sorts to all those people who put up with me. And on that note, it’s the “community” I want to talk about.

During my previous time as an admin, I did my best to act with respect towards ALL members of this forum and tried to be even handed with those I dealt with, even when what I really wanted was to use nothing more than four letter words and suggestions as to the other persons maternal origins. In person, I’m not above a good rant every now and again (as Max, McKee, and whole bunch of others can testify to) but through it all, I try to find some humourous aspect of the situation. Let’s face it, life is absurd.

With the exception of the legendary incident involving Castrovinci flogging his piece of crap Park Bench Air Deflectors (which still ranks in my mind as the funniest episode in Dieselram history…a story for another time), I think overall I maintained a pretty level hand with members. Maybe it’s a Canadian thing, I dunno, but even in a semi anonymous forum setting I try to be polite and respectful to all members. But I’m going to speak out as a community member about something that greatly disturbs me.

The stuff being posted in the so called “debate” forum…my God…so much of it is pure, unadulterated rubbish. Garbage. The postings ARE NOT in any way shape or form constructive, informative, debateable or frankly, intelligent. There is no “debate” in these postings. I for one am not seeing constructive debate on issues. I sure as hell don’t see much in the way of solutions to the supposed “issues”. What I am seeing is 3rd hand propaganda written by people not from this forum that is being reposted verbatim. It has no place in this forum. And I don’t give two sh_ts who gets offended by that statement. Enough is enough.

Years ago I posted some criteria for posting to the “Other” forum…things to consider before posting like
1) “Is it respectful?” ,
2) “Is it promoting a political agenda”
3) “Is it written by someone else” and
4) “Does it serve any purpose other than to inflame members of this site?”.

Because when you incite hatred (yes, let’s call a spade a spade)…when you incite hatred of others you have overstepped the bounds of common decency and respect, not mention the legal aspects of doing this. The “Other” section was always intended to be more funny than angry. And the debate section was intended for opinions, not propaganda.

It’s no secret that the majority of members here are supporters of the Republican Party. Fine. But guess what? We have people here who are supporters of the Democratic Party. They have different views. Does that make them idiots? No, it does not. To paint all Democrats as whiny snivelling rich socialites is the same as me painting all Republicans as nothing more than ignorant gun toting Fox News watching rednecks with double digit IQ’s who have no sense of morality or decency other than what the local televangelist tells them is the flavour of the moment. It’s not accurate, nor is it fair.

This site self moderated for a very long time before I became an administrator. Above all else it was a community, where people were welcome. When did that change? When did some users come to think it is acceptable to heap derision upon those who think differently? When did this forum become an anti-immigrant, anti-Democratic, anti-Obama bashing site instead of a DIESEL Community? When did this community lose sight of what this forum is supposed to be for? After having been away for awhile, I am shocked at what I’m seeing. This is not the Dieselram community I contributed to for many years.

Did anyone ever stop to consider that this site costs money to maintain and the only way to fund it is to either foot the bill ourselves (meaning Mr Watkins) or have vendors pay to advertise on this site? God, what must our sponsors think? Did anyone stop to consider that maybe we should be welcoming new members, not closing ranks and pointing sharp sticks at new arrivals? This was always a respectful site…”family” orientated if you will. What the hell happened?

So here it is in a nutshell.

I remember a great many postings during Bush’s time in office where members were defending their Commander in Chief. Specifically (being ex Army myself) I recall many comments along the lines of the following: “You may not like Bush, but he is my President, he is my Commander in Chief, and you should respect that office. As a member of the Armed Forces, I take my oath to my country seriously. Please be respectful”.

The people of the United States made their choice in a Free Election. Obama is now your Commander in Chief. Deal with it. Respect your President.

Or, does this not apply in the case of one who is a Democrat?

I come here for technical help on my Dodge Truck. I also come here to occasionally have a laugh, and to sometimes read something written by a member that falls outside the technical aspect of diesel trucks. Along the way I've met some outstanding people, and made what I hope are lifelong friends.

I don’t (and never did) come here to read hateful propaganda. Last time I checked this was Dieselram…not some two bit Yahoo discussion forum.

If you feel incapable of exercising restraint and decency, then feel free to move along and start your own website where you can post to your heart’s content.

This was well written Paul, and I like what you said. It sure does put things in perspective doesn't it?

I am glad that your post ended like it did. I agree with everything you said. I would hate to log on one day and find that the site was gone because a few of us were determined to spread what we feel is right, at the detriment and downgradeing of others.
Y'all need to shape up!! Myself included.

Please don't contribute to chaseing off the best technical information source we have...US!
Thank you, Mr. vonTrapp, for your wake-up call!!

VT I have been wondering what it was going to take to pull you out of the woodwork??? As usual "Well Said". It is terrible that our Diesel family is being pulled apart by views and beliefs opinions and intolerance, that really have no bearing on the main focus of what brought us all together in the first place. Let's not forget our common thread.

The Von Trapp and the rest of the grey matter collective here on this site:

For years I learned, contributed, and stirred the pot and even poked fun every now again. My sign up date and number of posts reflects that. Recently about 2 or maybe 3 months ago there were some things said that completely took this Canadian right off the rails. Believe it or not I have learned not to retaliate in written form as this would dramatically drag down the collective IQ if I was to do so. What that means is that I took a breather, stood back and as VT indicates focused on other matters on the home front.

I felt that my efforts as a non-admin poster on this forum were being taken for granted and honestly down right abused by those whom recently seem completely put off by their free countries elected official. I don’t live there, I didn’t vote for the guy and it would be thought, based on respect, that outsiders, particularly those from another country would have their opinion’s respected and questioned in a thought worthy format that would cause one to “think, question and respond” and not spout “verbal diarrhea” as appears to be the most common system of response these days.

Most of you that know me well have come to understand what makes me tick. I am very sarcastic and have a very dry sense of humour. I am for the most part also very right leaning when it comes to the “socialistic” behaviours of the USA’s largest trading partner. That said, I hold our customs and heritage with as high a regard as you and your 4th of July and Apple Pie and take offense to it when someone claims them to be down right stupid and ignorant or even, get this, un-american – no, really, gee go figure?

I respect my friends down south and would hope that with these recent reflections one might see that this should be returned on a greater account.

Feel free to PM me, write me an email or just pick up the phone.

All for now,

Have a great day.

Wyatt,
Welcome back. I remember the thread that I think caused you to take a vacation (and I hope that it was a vacation that you were on). Speaking just for me, I have always enjoyed reading your postings and I hope you are back as a daily contributor.

VonTrapp, I was wondering when a well respected very senior member or administrator was going to step in and say what you just said, especially with what was being posted recently. In fact I am surprised that Rob has not shut this segment of the forum down. While I do enjoy the “To Debate” segment I was becoming uncomfortable when our members were beginning to attack each other – not debate each other – but attacking each other and suggesting that they leave.

OK I’m done – welcome back Wyatt, and VonTrapp – while am a political conservative (I did not say Republican) I do understand and agree with what you said in your letter.

Se’Maj

Thanks for posting that VT.
I love this site, but I found myself not checking in or posting too often in the last couple months simply because there was more nonsense and hating going on here than talk about diesels. Life is too short to be spending so much time focusing on the negative.
This is a diesel forum to talk about trucks, parts, upgrades, and beer of course, so let's keep it that way!
