Default Arthitic Steering

Seem that every time I let my 01 sit for more than 2 week the steering becomes very stiff, hard to turn for the 1st 50 miles or so. The most recent was this past weekend after the truck sat in a heated hangar for 2 weeks. Takes a lot more effort to turn the wheel than usual. Yesterday I had the front end off the ground while changing out my winter tires. At this time I had driven 100 miles and steering feel was back to normal. With the wheels off the ground and grabbing the tires I was able to turn the wheels lock to lock with what I would consider normal drag with no catches anywhere. I also spin the tires while watching the CV joint while turned full lock in both direction. No problems there. Got out the pry bar and looked for anything loose. Nothing I could find. So I greased all the fittings and put my summer tires on. My power steering rez is full and my brakes are not effected at all. Any Ideas?

The power steering got stiff and noisy on the Jeep and changing out the fluid fixed it.

Is the PS whinning at all? Could be time for a fluid change like Clunk said, or maybe the pump is getting weak and it takes a while for the seals inside to swell from heat.

Pump makes no noise and the brakes work fine. There any good way to change the fluid?

Here's a free downloadable 2001 service manual.
The download is kinda slow but worth the wait.

Now look on page 1625 for flush instructions.

Could do the slow method. Suck some out, top off, drive, repeat till looks fresh.

I usually just pull off the return line somewhere and drain it and then refill it a couple of times.
