Re: Cornbread Red won't start
Howbouta' update,
Cornbread Red has another injection pump...turns out the old one wouldn't start the motor without cranking the starter until the batteries were nearly done. After starting, it would run like a scalded dog but 'jes wouldn't start right....starting electronics I guess. 117,000 miles.
15psi idle/10psi WOT lift pump pressures & cool fuel.
With advice and assurances from Maxtorq & RAF, I bought a rebuilt SO pump and it's doing ok so far. Being a pump with warranty and too recent a purchase to risk losing that warranty, the Comp wire is disconnected...ugghhh
If the pump is still good in 6 months, I'll post who built it.
The job went well as it's fairly straight foward but like RAF sez', ya gotta hava mirror so you can watch the pump shaft/woodruff key lining up with the keyway groove in the timing gear. I found a 2.5" dia. mirror mounted on a "choke cable" with a solid, bendable wire inside so it'll stay like you bent it.
I also bought a little steering wheel puller and some extra bolts since the ones with the puller were too long for the job.
The timing gear was pressed on tight too! Pump shaft torque spec is 125 lbs./ft. !!!
Careful insertion on the install was the game but I had to take the pump out an' jes' barely turn the pump shaft 3 times before it and the Woodruff key fit the timing gear correctly....I felt the gear slip onto the pump shaft when I pushed the timing gear after it lined up.
The injector lines filled in 3 long cranks and the engine started the 4th after eventually tightening the 3 injector fittings I had loose.
The motor now starts inna half second, even cold like it always has. I'm considering bigger injector nozzles now.
I'm mighty grateful for the most expert help and advice from Maxtorq and RAF.
