Default Fuel Mileage: 6 speed G56 vs 48RE

Ok guys, which one is better on a Mega Cab for fuel mileage and my application: mostly daily driver, towing a 6000# TT frequently (upgrading to a 5th wheel TT in '09 perhaps). I'e got about a week before I can't change my mind (ordered the auto). I really like shifting, but the wife wants an auto. But she has her Jeep GC to drive. Just looking for your thoughts/prefences.

Is the 48RE better for highway cruising and fuel mileasge?

I would say no. I would stick with the manual if you want better mileage but there only will be a small difference. Duckmaster

I had an 04.5 with auto and 3.73 now have an 05 6sp with 3.73 both had 32" tires. the auto got better milage for sure dew too gearing different. 2000 rpm on the highway with the auto got me 73mph same 2000 rpm with the stick in 6th only gives me 62 mph.

Due to the gear ratio in the manual G56 tranmsission it causes higher rpm's which translates to more fuel consumption.

Towing will be about the same with either transmission.

Most of my auto customers are claiming better milage than those with manuals. I haven't towed anything yet, but so far my auto is getting about 3 mpg better than my manual did. I'm sure its due to the higher O/D ratio.

I will have to agree with these guys. I got better mileage in town with the G56 than I did with the auto. But better highway cruizing and mileage with the auto.
The manual is very slow (everything beats you from a stop.....). Combined with the higher rpm on the freeway, I just had to do something. I just traded mine off (only 14,500 miles) and went back to an auto. Now I can keep up with traffic easily from stops (And if I want, I can beat 'em ). Stick with the auto, you will be glad you did.

Thanks Dan and others--I think will just stick with the auto. Appreciate everyone's help in this forum. This is my first diesel and you guys are helping me buy it smart.

Just wish that 48RE had more gears, but I'd rather suck that up than wait longer for the 68RFE 6-speed and beta test that, lose my last chance for a 5.9, and end up with the new 6.7. Sure it's great equipment, but I'd rather go with proven technology that I know works. The 6.7 sounds like it's much more finicky and complex than the 5.9 it replaces, especially with the DPF, EGR system, and all the oher EPA doo-dads added in. There's a lot to be said for simplicity. My kids will be graduating from high school the next time I buy a new truck (and their only 2nd and 3rd graders now).

I'd like to hear any tips anyone's got on how to get the most out of that 48RE and esnure a long life. I've heard good things about it in the posts but have also heard that you can waste the Tq Converter by adding a power chip and thowing too much hp at it.

There is a good write up in the latest Diesel Power Mag about the RE48 and how to (well how someone) rebuilds them for max performance.
