Default 2011 Ram 68RFE info/problems

Hi All,

It has been a long while since I have posted. Hope all is well. I still see a lot of familiar names! My truck has been deleted for over a year with 90k km and I finally installed the H&S trans tune over the weekend to see if it helps with my possible trans issue.

Problem: Towing 10K lb toy hauler on lower speeds up and down hills the TC has difficulty locking or lack of locking and all revs and feels like it struggles a bit with the load.
- While going up steep grades and traveling relatively low speeds 30-50 km/hr the TC will not lock in 2nd or 3rd gear (It will blink on the H&S controller but not lock) especially on lower speed logging roads. I have found this causes fairly high trans temps 240-250+ degrees F. So far no high temp alarms on the truck so assuming this is ok. Trans was serviced a year or so ago
-The other issue when descending down slower steep grades the TC does not lock despite traveling 30-50 km/hr and no exhaust break engagement. Other times it works like it should.
-Trans seems to shift well and lock in 4-6 gears
-After installing trans tuning the truck started out doing the same symptoms but after a while of driving the trailer the trans started to do what it was supposed to with much cleaner crisp shifts and actually locking in on descents for the exhaust brake at various speeds. Line pressure set at 170psi.

I thought this might be a high pressure solenoid issue but after talking to a few people with the same truck it would seem that this is normal? To me it seems worse than ever and now with a new tune and one return trip of driving the truck seems to be running much much better!?

I am curious if I am missing anything on how flaky the low gears are on 68RFE. Adding a programmer I understand can cause issues but the truck really has been rock solid since install.

Any thoughts appreciated thanks,

Andrew

Well back to my trans issue. When towing the trailer while torque locked everything is happy temps stay under 180 and shifts are solid. When I hit hills with steep grades and it goes out of torque lock like stop and go or slow winding road with sudden steep humps it feels like I have all engine and little pull. A couple times I am just crawling to make it over the hump. If the grades continue I have a difficult time getting the trans to lock up and the heat starts.

Last year I got in trouble and hit 300 or so for a short period. Serviced the trans and with no trailer all is good. Just did a short trip towing probably 12k pounds estimate towed great until I got to the slow moving steeps then the gradual hill dirt road. Could not lock converter and to be fair it was a slow moving logging road. Once temps hit about 217 o put in 4 low and temps dropped under 200. Now the last few days at idle in gear and park the truck is making a whirling noise coming from trans area. It comes and goes and sounds a bit concerning.

If I tap the throttle it goes away then immediately back. Fairly loud but hard to hear with out window down. Truck shifts fine, no shutter, TC seems fine unloaded but I feel my time is coming. I have another fairly big trip with the trailer in a week and a road trip this weekend no trailer. I sure hope I can limp this thing through summer. Curious on thoughts. I feel like I have started to wear out the TC. 170k km on the truck. Thanks

Just thoughts..my 07 and 09 never lock while towing in 2nd or 3rd.
Never locks below 30 mph. Don't know what the parameters are for '11.
Definitely more heat when unlocked and the cummins can usually deliver all the rpms you want in just about any situation with the tranny/torque converter being the mushy link.
Yes, I've seen 220-230 on longer slower hills and gravel roads. I haul storage sheds so I've seen it.
If the clutches were slipping you should have a code and go into limp mode, which gives you 1st and 4th and no lockup. If it's not doing that I would thing the clutches are not slipping.
Never heard of wearing out the torque converter but I guess it's possible.
Regardless, more power would let you produce more 'slip' in the stator which means more heat.
A tighter tc might help but at that mileage I would be inclined to go ahead and upgrade the tranny if you're springing for a super up tc..

My $.02

Thanks for the reply. I fairly confident the clutches are not slipping. Lately I have been towing in stock mode as I find the tow mode on H&S just cause the heat problems to be worst under slow driving conditions. Pretty much going to run this thing until it stops. Just prefer it would not happen in the middle of no where! I upped our tow insurance to add an RV just in case. I really dislike these trans. Lots of companies rebuild them will have to do some research. A friend of mine just did a BD tranny and he hates the chatter it makes at idle. He says it holds lots of power and shifts hard. Hoping to take it for a drive at some point. Will see how it goes today. Cheers

There are some good ones out there.
Research can tell a lot for sure.
Certainly wouldn't recommend rebuilding to stock.
Both my trucks have an upgraded tranny from a little known company in Wisconsin. $3400 plus labor includes a new tc, shipping and core return, and some pretty good upgrades from stock.
Like I said, I work my truck every week and I've been pretty happy with them.
